Best Places to Work in Las Vegas

Every year, the Las Vegas Review-Journal lists some of the best companies throughout Nevada, based on nominations from readers and surveys of employees. Prior editions of the list included popular internet retailer Zappos.com, which is headquartered in nearby Henderson, Nev., and MGM Resorts International, the largest private-sector employer in Las Vegas.

The companies highlighted in the most recent list may, according to the Review-Journal, reflect changing workplace attititudes and a desire for a caring environment and traditional benefits over other perks.

Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada

This alcohol distributor won first place in the Las Vegas Business Press list for its commitment to employees, and emphasis on charity and work/life balance. The company gives "enthusiastically" to the University of Nevada Las Vegas, which is known for its undergraduate and graduate degree programs in culinary and hospitality management. They also help, even encourage, employees to spend time with family through a variety of family-oriented events, and because they promote from within and offer continuing education, corporate morale is high.

The company, with offices in Las Vegas and Reno, is a division of Southern Wine and Spirits of America, the largest wine and spirits distributor in the U.S.

Frias Transportation Management

If you hail a cab in Vegas, it's likely affiliated with Frias Transportation Management of Las Vegas, Nevada's largest transportation company. Frias includes five taxicab companies and a limousine company that serve Las Vegas and the surrounding areas in southern Nevada.

The company has what the Review-Journal calls an entrpreneurial feel, even with 2,000+ employees. New taxicab drivers are trained by mentors, and are promoted from within. The company also offers health and wellness benefits, an unusual perk in the industry. Company employees are also active in philanthropy -- volunteering to help local veterans in Veterans Stand Down.

The Palms

A family feel and respect mark The Palms Casino Resort, which employs roughly 4,000 people in Las Vegas. Employees enjoy the perks you'd expect working for one of the most well-known casino hotels, such as concert tickets and discounts, but employees also cite benefits like health insurance and flex time. The company stresses its open communication, including newsletters, town-hall meetings and coffees with the president.

KLAS-TV

KLAS-TV, a CBS affiliate, is the oldest TV station in Las Vegas. The station encourages open communication between departments and within staff, in the firm belief that an informed staff is as important as an informed public.

According to the Review-Journal, the station also emphasizes a work/life balance, understanding the unique stressors that accompany the life of a journalist. And the station encourages camaraderie in flag footbal and softball teams, office parties, and cookouts.

They also offer opportunities for philanthropic involvement in organizations such as the Las Vegas Springs Preserve and Tools for Teachers.

Bailey Kennedy

Collegial atmosphere dominates at the small and relatively young southwest Las Vegas law firm. Perhaps the company's most famous perk is the "free lunch" it gives every day to each of its 31 employees. The lunches include open discussions about cases and other business.

Other benefits include the opportunity to move up within the firm. According to the Review-Journal, all of its summer interns have received full-time offers at the firm, and all of its paralegals started as assistants at the firm.

Employees at Bailey Kennedy also enjoy a work-life balance that includes annual outings for staffers and their families and other events geared toward building relationships and respect.
